Filming/Editing Blog

Today in class we were supposed to finish filming and begin editing. I began by checking out the equipment for filming. This included getting the camera pass, camera and tripod. Once I checked everything out my group and I began filming. For the first shot we did the scene that shows how the shoes are stylish. We had already filmed this shot but decided to change it so our shots never repeated with the same shoe. I filmed this scene while the three actors were, Roscoe W, Zeke M and Elijah S. I stood at the bottom of the stairs as they ran down them. This shot is a low angle and a three-shot because there are three actors. This scene was taken on my phone because the quality was much better.
Next, we went to the media studies classroom to film our next scene. This scene shows how Nike shoes are comfortable. I filmed and Elijah was the actor. He wore slides and sat in a comfortable chair to show how he was comfy wearing the slides. For this shot I started close to the shoes then, zoomed out to show the whole actor. Once we finished with all of our filming we went to begin editing. Unfortunately, the computers were having issues so we could not edit. Because of these issues we removed all of the footage from previous filming off the computer so it would not be lost. I emailed the shots from my phone to the computer so we could have all the footage together. Then, we saved all of the footage on my flash drive.
This issue however, was not the only one of the day. After all of the footage was saved I began my blog. But since there are few working computers in the classroom, another group had their footage saved on it so I had to leave. I could not find another computer so I downloaded the blogger app. This app does not let you publish work without paying a fee. But there were no more computers and this app could make all future blogs much easier, so I bought it. Then I published my blog. But I thought I published it twice so I deleted the published one. This deleted every version and I had to start over. Overall, there were many issues today with both editing and blogging but everything got worked out and finished.

Filming Blog

Today, in class, my group, consisting of myself, Roscoe W., Zeke M., and Elijah S. filmed part of our Nike shoe commercial.  I was in charge of getting all of our equipment for filming. I had to fill out the checkout sheet and get the equipment. I checked out a camera, camera bag, tripod, tripod bag and filming pass. I bought an SD card so I didn't check one out. Once I got all our materials we headed out to our first location. For our first clip we started on the running track at our school. We took several clips using different actors and shoes so we could decide which one was the best when we edit. Most of the footage was taken using the school camera but I took a few shots on my cell phone because the lighting on the camera was very dark. Our actors for the scene were Zeke M. and Elijah S. wearing all black Tanjin Nike sneakers and Nike Air Max 270 sneakers.

Roscoe and I did the filming. We used the tripod when the actors were running to film a pan. When we filmed the close up we took a hand held shot close to the ground. The two shots taken at the track will be used as the first part of our commercial. We will first show the running scene, then insert the close-up of the shoe, then the next shot will begin. Our next filming location was at the main stairs in our school. In this shot, I was an actor. My job was to show a rival shoe company so we could promote Nike shoes. I wore all white vans so that when the other actor, Zeke entered the shot with his brightly colored Nike shoes they would be the main focus that draws the audience's eyes to the shoes. This scene, unlike the scene before, shows how Nike shoes are fashionable. While the scene before shows how the shoes are useful for athletics and exercise.

For our last scene we will be using Nike slides to show how Nike Shoes provide comfort. This variety of uses for the shoes helps make the commercial appeal to all audiences. We didn't have time to film this shot so we are planning to film in class on Monday. Once we finished filming we went back to the classroom to 'dump' our footage. Elijah checked out a SD card reader to put our footage onto the computer. I created a new file then I transferred all of the footage. After the footage was transferred and saved I returned the SD card reader and all of the equipment. I moved the paper that I filled out when I checked out the materials to the returned folder for my period. Overall, Our filming went very smoothly and we accomplished almost everything we wanted to.

Editing Lesson Blog

Today in class we learned how to check in and out cameras and camera equipment and how to do basic edits. First, to check out your equipment you must fill out the check out paper, get your camera, than put your paper in your period's folder. When you are done with the equipment the day after you checked it out you must return what you took and move the paper you filled out the day before to the check-in cubby. To use the camera you simply open it to turn it on and close it to turn it off. To charge the camera to plug the cord into the battery on one end of the chord, and the other into the wall. To use the tripod you can extend the legs by unlocking the legs then pulling them to the size needed than locking them again. The top of the tripod, the part with the camera on it, can be moved to film a tilt or pan. The tripod neck can also be changed to get different views and angles. This is useful when getting different shots from different places. One rule of thumb when using a tripod is when moving the tripod you must shorten the legs and neck. You also must remember to remove the camera so it doesn't break when moving from different filming locations.
Another thing we learned was how to use the editing software in our class. The software is pinnacle studios, we have three different versions, 17, 18 and 19. Before editing you must create a folder on the desktop to dump all of your footage. You must make a folder on the desktop because it is most compatible with pinnacle studios. Once you are on your editing page you will see your raw footage, which is untouched or not edited film. You will also see 3 AV tracks. We use track one for titles, track two for footage and track three for detached sound. You can drag raw footage to your AV track, where you can make cuts and detach audio. The red bar otherwise known as the play bar can be dragged to certain parts of footage. If you place your play bar on something you want to cut you can use the razor blade tool to separate the footage. Once the footage is separated you can highlight and delete the unwanted section.
The audio is another important part of editing. To delete audio highlight the section of unwanted audio then select detach audio. Once the audio is detached it can be found in the third AV track; there is can be deleted. If you want to remove all of the sound you can simply press the mute button on the second AV track. To add voiceovers you must film anything and say the script or play the sound into the microphone. Then, after you drag the footage onto the track, detach the audio. Leave the audio but highlight and delete the blank footage. Once you are done for the day and want to save, you press file, save movie as, then select your folder. When entirely finished with your project you will export it as a mp4 file in full size.

Planning Blog For Nike Shoe Commercial

Props- Some of the props we are going to use for our commercial are sports apparel, specifically Nike shoes. The actors in our commercial will have something that relates to sports, like a water bottle, basketball or they may be wearing headphones. The main subject of the commercial, the shoes, will be our main props. The exact shoes we will be using are Nike Air Force 1's, Nike Roshes, Nike Air Max's, Nike Jordan's, and Nike Slides.

Costumes- The actors will be dressed in clothes that go with the shoe that the actor is wearing. For example, when the actors are running they will be dressed in athletic clothes (as much Nike clothes as possible). The costumes play an important role when it comes to the commercial because we want the shoes to look the best they can so people will be provoked to buy them.

Schedule- Our next blog will be a storyboard of our commercial. the story boarding will be on October 14. The next objective is filming. the filming will be taking place on October 17 witch is a early release and the next following blue day, October 22. After filming we will edit our footage. the editing will be on October 23.

Location List-  We are filming in many different places. For our athletic shoes we are going to film at the track field to do a running scene. For our comfort shoes we are going to use the couch in the media studies classroom. For our stylish shoes we will be filming at the building 5 stairs, we will use the stairs by filming the actors walking.

Back-up plan- In case of an unfortunate scenario while filming, we have ideas ready to counter the situation. It is not unlikely that while filming rain will be present. That's why our idea to embrace the rain rather than hide from it will be beneficial. In case of rain, we plan to use puddles and rain to show how well our shoes hold up against any environment. Rain is not the only factor, we also have to bring into consideration the possibility of our team mate being absent. Thankfully, our commercial does not need 4 actors. We will work to play the part our teammate was supposed to.

Research Conventions and Codes

                                                  Research Conventions and Codes
Before even thinking about the production of our Nike shoe commercial, many aspects that must go into play include:
·         Setting
·         Lighting
·         Products
·         Actors
·         Props
·         Music
·         Voice overs and other editing
·         Camera angles
Setting takes much consideration as it starts us on our way to our commercial. In our commercial, we think an outdoor environment would convey the idea that Nike shoes can be worn in many different environments and will hold up. We will also use an indoor setting to shoe other uses for Nike shoes, such as comfort.
Lighting for our commercial would mostly be natural outdoor lighting. When being filmed indoors a spotlight may be used to highlight the shoes and make them look better.
Products are the shoes that are being used in the film. We will use many different types of shoes like Nike Roche’s for running, Nike Slides for comfort and Air Force One’s for style.
Actors are the people who wear and highlight the shoes abilities.
Props are all the other items we will use in our commercial. For example, a runner might be holding a water bottle or someone playing basketball might be wearing headphones.
Music in the commercial gives the viewer a better understanding of what the shoe is made and designed for. We wouldn’t use a laid back and chill song when trying to show off some Air Jordan’s. In our commercial, we will be using a hyped song when showing off sports shoes, a chill song when showing slides, and laid back when showing comfort shoes.
Voice overs and other editing is important to our commercial so it’s not only up to viewer interpretation when seeing the shoe in action. A voice over will be able to explain the shoe or even some back round. Our commercial will have voice overs throughout to make it easier for our viewers. The tone of the voice over will change according to the purpose of each shoe.
Camera Angles will be seen changing multiple times throughout the commercial. Depending on the scene, a different camera angle will be implemented into the commercial. We will use angles such as close-ups of the shoes, and tracking shots of our actors in the shoe.

Introductory Blog

Hello, my name is Paige and I am a freshman at Fort Lauderdale High School in Florida. I am  writing this blog for one of my classes, AICE Media Studies. My other classes are, Algebra 2 Honors, Chemistry Honors, AICE General Paper, AICE Global Perspectives, Spanish 1 Honors and Computer Technology Honors. My favorite classes are Chemistry, Algebra 2 and Media Studies. Math has always been my favorite subject which is why I enjoy Algebra and Chemistry. I have never taken a class like Media Studies before but so far I love learning about film. High School has been a big adjustment for me. I went to a small middle school that was very close to where I live, now I go a large school that is 30 minutes away, and the bus ride is an hour. Despite these changes I am enjoying high school.

I like participating in many different extra curricular activities. I am a volleyball player. I played in middle school and was captain of my team in 8th grade. After that I played at a club called Florida Suns. Now I am on the JV team at my high school and am going to start at a new volleyball club soon. I also joined the Surfrider Club, which is an environmental group that focuses on ocean conservation. I am also looking forward to being on the board of a nonprofit organization called Make a Friend Be a Friend Inc. where we support children who have disabilities that limit their ability to socialize/communicate. Next year I am hoping to join National Honor Society. In middle school I was president of National Junior Honor Society.

In my free time I like to play games, hang out with friends and watch TV. I used to play video games on my Xbox but now I only play games on my phone. Board games are also my favorite; I love Monopoly. Some of my favorite TV shows are Grey's Anatomy, Survivor and Friends. In the summer I go to North Carolina. I have lots of friends up there and we bike everywhere. I am 14 years old but my birthday is next week so soon' I will be able to get my learners permit to drive. I am very excited! That sums up almost everything you need to know about me, thanks for reading.
